What it is
Primary directions are the oldest timing measure in the tradition. They ask one question: as the sky turns on its daily rotation, how far must it carry one point of the birth chart before that point reaches the place another point held at birth. The distance the turning sky covers is the measure of time.
Nothing new enters the chart. The planets are frozen where birth found them, and the heavens simply keep rotating. One chosen point, the apheta or releaser, is the life-giving significator whose motion is watched. It is elected only from the aphetic places, the vital angles and their supports: the 1st, the 7th, the 9th, the 10th, and the 11th. As the rotation carries other points across the sky, some make hostile contact with the released point. The tradition calls such a contact the anareta, the destroyer. This app scans for it using the two malefics, Saturn and Mars, by conjunction, square, and opposition.
The chart is directed by its own daily turning, the primum mobile, and not by movement along the zodiac. This is what makes the technique a clock rather than a horoscope: the arc it measures is an arc of the equator, the great circle the daily rotation actually sweeps, converted to years at a fixed rate.
How the tradition computes it
Ptolemy first elects the releaser. The election runs the cascade of Tetrabiblos III.13: in a day chart the Sun, in a night chart the Moon, is taken if it stands in an aphetic place; failing that the other luminary if it is aphetic; failing that a sect-correct fallback to the Ascendant or the Lot of Fortune. The candidate places themselves are named in Tetrabiblos III.12, and the whole procedure serves the question of Tetrabiblos III.11, the duration of life.
The arc is then measured, and here lies the key. Tetrabiblos III.14 fixes the rate of conversion once for all:
"each equatorial degree being taken to signify one solar year." (Tetrabiblos III.14, Ashmand)

The arc is not the difference of the two points' zodiac longitudes. It is the equatorial arc through which the daily rotation must carry the promissor before it stands at the proportional place the significator held at birth. Ptolemy gives this arc a definite form at each of the angles, and a general proportional rule everywhere between them:

The right-ascension and oblique-ascension machinery is the ascensional geometry of the Almagest, which supplies the tables that turn a zodiac position into its equatorial coordinate. The proportional rule treats a point as a fraction of its own semi-arc in temporal hours, so the three angular cases are simply its closed forms. The obliquity used throughout is 23.4367 degrees.
What it signifies
The apheta is the giver of life, the point whose steady carriage across the sky measures out the years. While it meets only benefic configurations or empty degrees, the significator passes unopposed and the time reads as duration granted. The hostile contact is what the technique is built to find.
The two destroyers are the malefics by nature. Saturn is cold and dry, the slow chill that binds and exhausts; Mars is hot and dry, the sudden heat that burns and cuts. When the daily rotation brings either to the released point by conjunction, square, or opposition, the tradition reads a test of the life force, where the vital current is pressed by an unfriendly quality. A malefic in its own dignity presses more mildly; a weak, out-of-sect malefic presses harder and more crudely.
One discipline is absolute: the measure is a measure of time, an arc converted to years, and never a date of death. Ptolemy himself qualifies the duration of life with mitigations, degrees of strength, and the mixture of contributing rays. A single hostile arc is a hinge in the constitution, not a verdict.

The app once measured the directed arc as a naive difference of ecliptic longitudes. That measure carries no latitude in it at all, so it can be none of Ptolemy's four quantities: it would direct a chart cast in Warsaw and one cast in Quito identically, when the true ascensional difference can reach tens of degrees per endpoint at high latitude. The engine now computes the equatorial proportional-place measure of Tetrabiblos III.14 instead, one equatorial degree per solar year, at obliquity 23.4367 degrees, degenerating exactly to right ascension at the mid-heaven, oblique ascension at the Ascendant, and oblique descension at the descendant.
The limits are stated plainly. Every point is taken at zero ecliptic latitude, because the chart stores none, so a body far off the ecliptic inherits a small declination error. Refraction and parallax are not modelled. And the refusal to name a date of death is doctrinal discipline, not a gap in the arithmetic. Separately, the bounds distributor, which times life themes rather than the end of life, still advances the directed Ascendant on the older naive key of about one ecliptic degree per year. That is by design: the distributor reads which bound-lord governs a stretch of years, a question of theme, not of survival.
Seen in a real chart
Marcus Aurelius was born shortly before dawn, a nocturnal birth, so the sect light is the Moon. Running the Tetrabiblos III.13 cascade, the app asks whether that Moon stands in an aphetic place. It does: the Moon sits in the 11th house, one of the five prorogatory places. The election therefore stops at the first rung, and the Moon is the releaser.
Directing the chart by its daily rotation across the coming ten-year window, the reading finds one hostile contact to the apheta, a Mars test, Mars being the planet of action. A Mars square to the released Moon has already elapsed, at a directed arc of about 12.3 degrees, which by the one-degree-per-year key places it well in the past.
The app also flags the fragility of the result. A shift of only ten minutes in the recorded birth time could change either the apheta election or the first directed event, so the timing is offered as provisional unless the time is rectified. This is honest for an ancient chart whose hour survives only as "shortly before dawn."
How to read it in the app
The directions appear in the lifespan section of the reading, where the app names the elected apheta, states the nearest hostile arc as a measure of years, and marks the ten-year window it scans. Each line carries the citation footnote the reader sees, the apheta election resolving to Tetrabiblos III.13 and the arc measure to Tetrabiblos III.14, so the doctrine behind the number is one tap away.
